What is the ambiance that surrounds historic downtowns? You may think it lies in grand old architecture, or perhaps in the nostalgia that’s created as one reminisces about growing up and going to the movies in his/her own downtown, or maybe shopping at the downtown Five & Dime. Perhaps the ambiance created is different for everyone.
In downtown Wilmington, a national and state designated Main Street community, we believe the ambiance created lies in the people who have businesses here, the people who plan events here, and the people who have a vision for seeing that the historic downtown remains an integral part of our city. It’s people who keep it alive. Without them it would be nothing more than bricks and mortar. Where else can you have lunch and your “usual” is on your table before you have to ask for it? Where else can you be greeted by your first name when you walk in the door? Where else can you talk about your favorite type of jewelry only to find it in stock the next time you go shopping there? Where else can you walk down the street and be warmly greeted by passersby's. These are only a few examples of the special quality of our downtown.
Among the downtown business mix, you'll find a historic hotel, several restaurants and various shopping opportunities, featuring collectibles, jewelry, antiques, novelties, books, and more. A multitude of service businesses also call downtown Wilmington home. Green space also has its place, with a quaint "pocket park" and ample green space surrounding the county courthouse. While meandering the downtown, be sure and check out the fabulous outdoor mural that now resides in the district. For those wishing to learn more about our historic downtown, a self-guided walking tour booklet is available at the Convention & Visitors Bureau.
We invite you to visit downtown Wilmington. Whether it is your first time, or a return visit, we know you’ll enjoy yourself.
